2015's Best Kinky Films

The Duke of Burgundy

best-kinky-films-2015-01With a 1970’s soft core vibe and plenty of cool surprises up its sleeve, The Duke of Burgundy, (named after a butterfly) is a fetish-rich treat. The narrative centres on the troubled relationship between two women. An aristocratic butterfly and moth expert, Cynthia (Sidse Babbett Knudsen) and the artistic Evelyn (Chiara D'Anna). In Cynthia’s mansion they play out their daily routine of subjugation and domination, with Evelyn quietly washing her mistress’s underwear or providing foot massages.

As the film presses forward there’s a huge twist as Evelyn is revealed as the true mistress of the house. Carefully choreographing the day's play for her own pleasure. We see Cynthia’s desperation to keep Evelyn happy spill over into fear, as she wiggles her fingers nervously in the air.

To please her lover, Cynthia gets in a local builder to construct an unusual BDSM bed, which will give Evelyn the feeling of being buried alive. In a cute, funny scene he tells her it’s a contraption that’ll take ages to complete, casually suggesting she opts for a human toilet instead.

Visually, this is one of this year's best kinky films and is an homage to the euro-trashy smut fests of 40 years ago. It has an underlying realism, eccentricity and humor that elevate The Duke of Burgundy into something more. Definitely worthy of being named one of the best kinky films of 2015.

The Overnight

When love goes wrong none of us really know how to put it right again, but swinging is always an option. In this indie comedy, discontent couple, Alex (Adam Scott) and Emily (Taylor Schilling), have a sex life that’s flat lined after becoming parents. A running joke that appears at either end of the picture. Don’t worry about whether that’s a genuine inevitability, because there are plenty more belief challenging moments to follow.

In a park they meet weirdo Kurt (Jason Schwartzman) and agree to go back to his place, where they meet his wife, Charlotte (Judith Godrèche). The action moves from boozing, to skinny dipping to sexy photography and beyond – it’s a fast, startling and sexy journey.

The Overnight maintains a tongue in cheek attitude that keeps the atmosphere light. There’s no deep, introspection on the nature of love and life, but you’re guaranteed to giggle at the silliness of it all.

S&M Sally

Another lesbian centered film, and one of the best kinky films released in 2015 is this well observed satire. The BDSM lifestyle is presented in a relaxed, authentic way. Through the eyes of butch Jamie (Michelle Ehlen, who also wrote, produced and directed the film) and femme Jill (Jen McPherson) a couple still negotiating who’s actually on top in their relationship.

best-kinky-films-2015-02Sadomasochistic cinema often takes itself too seriously, but Ehlen adds a refreshing touch of normality to situations that are potentially shocking or titillating. One scene shows Jamie and Jill casually eating cheese in the snack area of a bondage club, while people wander around them. She explains: "This is the first film of its kind to explore erotic practices in a comedic yet realistic way. It's the first film to explore the pinker shades of the butch spectrum."

S&M Sally was inspired by Ehlen’s own experiences in the bondage community. Which had left her buzzing but confused about how the extreme sexual elements of BSDM spill over into people everyday lives.

Bound

Not a flick that’s ever going to the Oscars. This raucous mockbuster is still worth a look if you want some undemanding filth in your regular Friday film night. Released by Asylum, the team who also brought you Sharknado, Bikini Spring Break and Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark. Everything is here, from the shaky 40 Shades references, to a kitsch rape revenge fantasy and numerous boob shots.

The action follows hardworking real estate manager Michelle Mulan (Charisma Carpenter). She’s a high-flying career woman who can’t get no sexual satisfaction and dumps her boring boyfriend after another dull session. Her luck seems to change when she meets Ryan Black (Bryce Draper) - clearly named to reference Mr Grey - and he immediately goes down on her.

The non-negotiated S&M action soon begins to hot up frantically, but then the film switches tone completely. Michelle discovers that, bewilderingly, Ryan is planning to rape her daughter. Furious, she tracks him down at home and beats him up S&M style. Using hand cuffs, nipple clamps and his leather posing pouch. In the closing minutes she leaves him to the police to be arrested as a paedophile and emerges a new woman. Ready to revive her dads failing real estate business. It’s random, low-budget and exploitative; serious film buffs won’t be impressed, but for people who love ‘so bad it’s good’ type films, Bound is worth a shot.
