If you’re looking for some fetish fun but time is limited and you want a change from the club scene, why not try the internet? In our series of fetish dating website reviews, we check out BDSM Passions. But how does this kinky website rate?

Unlike in the vanilla world, people who are active in online kink communities like BDSM Passions often earn a reputation for practising safe sex and for not taking too many risks.

Indeed, sex is a joy and no one wants to become ill as a result, so most dating sites try to foster a sense of community where the kinky lifestyle can be discussed, along with an understanding of the risks.

Fetish culture is not inherently dangerous, but unsafe sex is. Members can dive in and use chat rooms to get to know people, then find out about their attitudes to sexual health before ever meeting up.

BDSM Passions review: design matters

BDSM Passions is a dating site that should invest in the quality of its homepage. It looks dated and badly designed, with gaping empty panels at the sides.

A box across the top contains some fetish activity key words, but clicking on them redirects you to alt.com , another dating site. It’s hard to understand why this would happen, other than the site owners have found multiple sign-ups a successful way to monetize online dating.

In the search bar there are two unusual options, 'Save $$$' and 'Make $$$', both take you through to information about work from home jobs and loans. Does anyone really want to think about finances when they’re busy cruising? Er, no!

BDSM Passions review: Fetishes, and advertising, abound

Signing up to BDSM Passions is free, but to get your hands on their 3.5 million members based all around the globe, you need to pay $4.95.

They mention the benefits of joining for you as a member, adding that the cash will help fund their ‘additional network development’. This dating network is vast, and they've got "passions" listed to cover just about every fetish: including ‘Mullet Passions’, Running Passions’ and ‘Christian Passions’, all yours for $4.95.

Upgrading will also remove the banner ads for ‘Dungeon Cams’ and ‘BDSM Babes - Make Money Now’ which become progressively more annoying with time. Plus, paid-up members can remove their profile from public searches.

BDSM Passions review: Not much activity...

The forum is not particularly hectic, with a flow of comments spaced out over a few years and the tag ‘Former Member’ popping up regularly, but it does give you an insight into life at BDSM Passions.

One forlorn member has even started a thread with ‘Am I alone here?’, someone else mentions the ‘widespread inactivity’ in reference to real life playtime events, while another has complained about a clique that picks on newer recruits in the chat rooms.

These spaces are unmonitored and the old-timers in question quickly accuse the newer member of being a troll. The site recommends the block button in such instances, but this is the very first forum thread and not exactly a great advert for an inclusive fetish community. Some people will be happy to adopt a thicker skin in these instances, but many find a nasty attitude boring and move off.

One thread on self-bondage is a real eye-opener for the uninitiated and has some generous tips for testing out your slip knot skills.

Consent and the law within fetish play situations are also discussed and obviously BDSM Passions members are willing to chat on the public forum. However, this happens on a very limited scale and it feels stilted. Similarly, there are only two blogs and a handful of videos, so interaction is awkward.

...but it's not all bad!

Despite the lack of party atmosphere in public spaces, there are plenty of membership profiles. Most seem to have modest photos and nicknames, but that’s because you are warned during the sign-up process that a ‘sexually suggestive’ moniker could get your account deleted. Really? On a fetish dating site?!

There are a few profiles rich in bondage paraphernalia, but many people are honest about being new and looking for guidance. They don’t lack enthusiasm, though, with most packing in plenty of personal information and wit.

Indeed, everyone looks genuine and many have been online within the last day or two, so clearly most of the activity here is happening on the lowdown.

Our reviewer found the that the kinky dating site BDSM Passions doesn't seem like the best place to organise your kinky social life, escalate a fetish, or hook up with players to launch you into the kinky lifestyle. However, if you want to ease yourself in gently and don’t mind navigating around the ridiculous advertising, it might be a fun distraction.
