We take a look at the infamous vanilla dating site, OKCupid. It claims to have an insane amount of users and match you up according to math. But on Fetish.com, we're naturally a kinky lot, so this OKCupid review lets you know if it's worth signing up or pass it up.

Does size matter?

OKCupid claims to have 30 million (yes, 30 MILLION) users. One million of whom log in daily. Additionally, it claims to be the 'highest rated dating app on earth', no less. Its big gimmick is that it claims to use math to match you with people who care about the things that you care about. Best of all, it's '100% FREE!' What more could we ask for...sign me up!

How OKCupid works

The sign-up process is incredibly quick and easy. It is as simple as popping in your email, new password, and date of birth. You'll then be shown a panel of pictures of prospective matches, and asked to pick three (the idea is that this will help the site to 'learn your preferences'.

It should be noted that gender-bending, PVC, and bondage-style profile pictures were nowhere to be seen. Think more crisp white shirts and Asos dresses. So, not exactly kinky! After selecting three of your type (if you can find them), you'll then be asked some random questions. Such as: 'could you be attracted to someone who is messy?'

Your matches on OKCupid

Once you have answered these questions, OKCupid presents you with your first batch of 'matches'.  We found these slightly puzzling because...well... OKCupid claims to match us with people who care about the things that we do. But it doesn't know anything about us yet! Again, if you're hoping for questions relating to gender-bending, impact play or anything else of a fetish-or kinky nature you're probably going to be disappointed.

OKCupid gets bonus points for not being fake

In the exceptionally good news, the dreaded bogus profiles seemed to be very thin on the ground. Indeed, most of the profiles that we looked at seemed to be real people, with genuine Facebook style pictures. Of course, there are no guarantees with anything of an online nature, but improbable pectorals and pneumatic-breasted porn stars were conspicuous by their absence, which is reassuring. However, the vast majority of people on there also seemed to be very 'straight' in terms of appearance. There were very few images of kinky action - no piercings, fetish wear or anything gender-bending on show.

It's also worth noting that the website's claims of having plenty of traffic certainly seems to be true. Within a few minutes of placing our profile picture, we'd racked up 22 views, six messages, and 13 likes. As far as pictures go, it was deliberately quite anonymous, so we were genuinely quite surprised that it attracted much attention at all. However, we did note that there were more than 159,000 people online at the same time as me, which is some pretty impressive traffic. But just how kinky are these thousands?

OKCupid's hidden kinky side

Getting down to business, though...how good is this website for members of the kinky community? Well, the answer is 'probably as good as anywhere else, but it's certainly not tailor-made'. The Public Profile section of the account does have some basic questions to answer about yourself, but there is nothing there specifically about sexual interests (or even sex for that matter). There's nothing stopping you from dropping details under the heading 'You should message me if...' for example, but how well received that would be is open to question.

Too innocent

The majority of profiles that we viewed seemed, for want of a better way of putting it, pretty innocent. We're not saying that there aren't any dark horses amongst the legions of people who like beach walks and pub lunches. But what we are saying is that you certainly wouldn't know that at first glance. In short, if you're looking for someone who is into your love of gender-bending, you're going to have to find out by talking to them about your kinky desires. Of course, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, if you're looking for a quick way to meet people who enjoy shibari, OKCupid is probably not that way.

100% free or not so 100% free

The other thing worth noting about OKCupid is that pesky little '100% FREE!' statement. Remember that, right back at the beginning? Well, unfortunately, that's not completely true. The basic functionality of the site is indeed free. You can certainly post your profile, picture and send and receive messages.

However, there is a whole raft of features that will require you to part with cash before you can use them. The majority are bundled as something known as 'A-List', which gives you increased search options such as search by body type and personality. This feature also allows you to see who has viewed your profile and filter messages by 'interest' - but not necessarily kinky interest. Additionally, there's also an option to pay to boost your profile if you choose to do so. Of course, all of this is optional, but saying that the site is '100%' free is not 100% true.

The long and the short of it

To conclude, OKCupid is certainly high quality, very busy and it seems to be doing a great job of keeping suspect profiles down. Unfortunately, it does have a premium section, and as far as kinky dating goes, there are probably better options.
