How many friends can you have?

Just recently people who have sent me a friend request are getting a message saying that I can't accept more requests. Is there a limit on the number of friends one can have?

I've had people tell me this also that they can't send me a friend request but then found out I can send them one instead.

I always thought it was limit on active friend requests that haddnt been accepted yet?

I've opened the boxes to send you a request and it looks fine - could perhaps there be a problem that they don't have enough points to send one?

I am not sure what it is. It's not outstanding requests as I pick them up each day. I don't think it's points of the other people because some of them tried again later and then friended me with no problem. 

Three people, all unconnected have said that they have had a message saying that I can't accept any more requests but others are not having any problems.

Thought I'd sent a request today. No record of points going from my account and no evidence of the request being sent.

Might just be me I guess.
