For kinksters into extreme bondage

The first thing most people think of when they hear the word bondage is shibari or kinbaku. By far, the ancient Japanese practice is one of the most common and oldest types of rope bondage. With intricate knots and designs available the sky’s the limit. But don’t limit your imagination to just using rope, there are plenty of other things you can use.

Many people with a latex or rubber fetish use bondage gear made from this material. Hoods, straps and cuffs are a few examples. They are a good alternative for kinksters who aren’t into leather or are vegan. Traditionally ball gags are made from rubber or silicone balls and a leather strap, but they can also be found with latex or rubber straps.

The next most common bondage material is leather. Bondage gear varies from harnesses, cuffs and collars to full body suits, gimp masks and more. Leather harnesses are quite popular amongst the gay fetish scene and play well into many bondage scenes of domination and submission.

If you’re in a pinch and you don’t have any of your BDSM sex toys or gear with you, or you’re new and just wanting to try it out, you can always use a scarf, belt, pair of stockings or tie to perform spontaneous bondage. Remember to always be safe when performing bondage! Always have a safeword and a pair of safety shears handy in case you need to cut your partner loose!"

What are typical extreme bondage scenes?

Many S&M scenes will combine bondage with torture. Imagine: a captive prisoner is tied to a chair with any number of sexual devices at the ready to deliver pain, pleasure and orgasms!

Bondage doesn’t always have to be sexual in nature either. Many people enjoy a bit of knotty activity for the challenge of creating a beautiful rope corset or harness. There are plenty of examples of shibari artists who have creating entire scenes or ‘rope paintings’ with a rope bunny tied up as a centrepiece.

Some common terms you should know are:
rigger: the top or person doing the tying
rope bunny: the bottom or person being tied

Where can you buy extreme bondage equipment?

It depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re into rope bondage, then your best bet is to determine what texture you like best. Traditional shibari requires a special type of rope and you should always treat your rope before you use it, otherwise you can cause rope burns on your bottom! Rope can be easily acquired at a hardware store or boat supply shop, of course online, sex shops or at fetish markets and conventions.

For latex or rubber, you’ll need to contact a fetish clothing supplier or sex shop that caters specifically to this type of material. Or make your own!

Leather is also in general pretty easy to find. You can go to a pet shop or equestrian supplier and of course sex shops will carry some type of leather bondage gear. Leather is another relatively easy material to DIY your gear from.

What makes extreme bondage?

As with most things, it’s a personal preference. One person’s extreme is another person’s typical scene. However, as a rule of thumb, if the practise works on RACK (Risk Aware Consensual Kink) rules instead of SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual) it would be classed as extreme. It could incorporate breath play, genital bondage, impact play or just an unusual material such as barbed wire.

There's more than one 'official' definition of what the letters in BDSM stand for, and plenty of people don't agree on their exact usage! However you use the term, though, it's a catch-all way of describing a whole bunch of kinks and fetishes that are more common than many people imagine: bondage and impact play, sadism and masochism, domination and submission. Safety, consent and respect for boundaries are all key in the practice of BDSM, and it's vital to negotiate properly with your partners before getting into anything heavy-handed. Thankfully it's not so hard to learn - most places around the world have their own BDSM communities that are only too happy to take in newbies and help them learn the ropes.
There's a lot to be said for slow, sensual sex, of course, and romance certainly has its place - but sometimes you just want to get down and dirty with someone who's as rough as you are. Rough sex isn't always kinky, it could be just a rough kiss, but for many BDSM fans, it forms a vital part of their sexual lives and relationships. The beauty of it is that it usually doesn't need a lot of planning or equipment; you can rough your enthusiastic partners up pretty much anywhere, anytime and anyhow. Just remember to play with a safeword, as people don't need whips and chains to reach their limits or realise that they need to call for a time out.
Many people who enjoy restrictive sensations crave the feeling of being immobilised, and there's no better way of doing that than a bondage body bag. They're available from a wide range of BDSM retailers, and they're one of the most complete and restrictive forms of full-body bondage available. The most important safety consideration with them is to ensure that the wearer is continuously supervised - it's not safe to leave someone so helpless alone for even a moment, as any number of things could occur. If you have that covered, though, wearing a bag like this can be a fantastically sensuous and comforting experience.
