From my personal experience, there are several ways to meet people in the lifestyle. Munches are my favorite. Erotic Arts Festivals and conventions are also great ways plus they usually have kink vendors. However, if you are brave you can always you can look for the triskelion decals and tattoos (not 100% foolproof). If you see a slave in their day collars (especially the large solid metal ones) approach their Master or D-type.

Not near you, but where I am, there are kink events regularly. Munches/ Sloshes, even at Renaissance Festivals, there are kink camps.
