Return

[OD****]

She showed up two days after her birthday.

No makeup.
Oversized hoodie.
Eyes carrying that hollow look people get when they’re pretending they’re fine.

An old friend.

Someone I’d known for years.

Someone I’d always wanted… quietly.

She stood in my doorway like she didn’t know whether she wanted to cry or collapse.

“He left,” she said.

That was it.

Two words.

Enough.

I stepped aside and let her in.

Didn’t hug her.

Didn’t rush her.

Just closed the door behind her and let the silence do its work.

She sat on my couch, shoulders slumped, staring at nothing.

“I feel stupid,” she said.

I leaned against the wall, watching her.

“No,” I said calmly.
“You feel hurt. There’s a difference.”

Her eyes flicked up to mine.

Something shifted.

A small crack in her composure.

She swallowed.

“I don’t want to talk about him anymore.”

I nodded once.

“Good.”

She blinked.

Not what she expected.

“You don’t need to relive it,” I continued.
“You don’t need to explain yourself.”
“You don’t need to be strong tonight.”

Her breath hitched.

I walked closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Stopped right in front of her.

“You just need to sit there,” I said quietly.
“And let someone else hold the weight for a while.”

Her knees pressed together.

Hands clenched in her hoodie sleeves.

“You always talk like that,” she whispered.

“Like what?”

“Like you already know what I need.”

I tilted her chin up gently.

Held her gaze.

“Because I do.”

Her pulse jumped under my thumb.

Not rushed.

Not desperate.

Just heavy.

Charged.

She didn’t look away.

Didn’t move.

Didn’t resist.

That was the moment.

Not a kiss.

Not a touch.

A surrender.

Soft.

Unspoken.

“You’re safe here,” I said.
“But you’re not in charge right now.”

Her lips parted.

A quiet exhale.

“Okay.”

One word.

Everything in me tightened.

I took her hand.

Placed it on my thigh.

Not suggestive.

Not aggressive.

Intentional.

“Stay,” I told her.

She stayed.

Her breathing changed.

Slower.

Deeper.

She wasn’t crying anymore.

She wasn’t thinking about him.

She was here.

With me.

“You don’t have to perform,” I said.
“You don’t have to impress.”
“You don’t have to give me anything.”

I leaned closer.

“But if you choose to…
I’ll take very good care of you.”

Her fingers curled slightly in my jeans.

Not grabbing.

Testing.

Asking.

I smiled.

“That’s it,” I murmured.
“Let yourself want.”

Her head dropped to my shoulder.

A quiet, broken sound escaped her throat.

Not ***.

Relief.

I wrapped an arm around her.

Held her there.

Let her feel what steady felt like.

What wanted felt like.

What being chosen felt like.

No rush.

No rush at all.

Just two bodies pressed together.

One heartbeat slowing another.

And the night stretching wide open in front of us.
