Ritual in BDSM is sometimes mistaken for theatre or unnecessary formality. But ritual can serve a practical psychological purpose.

A ritual is a repeated action that marks a transition from ordinary life into a particular dynamic or headspace. It might be kneeling before a scene, putting on a collar, using a particular honorific, presenting oneself in a certain position, or following the same opening and closing routine.

Through repetition, these actions can become strongly associated with what follows.

For a submissive, a familiar ritual may help shift attention away from everyday decisions and toward submission, service or surrender. For a Dominant, ritual can similarly mark the point at which they deliberately assume responsibility for directing the interaction.

This is one reason apparently simple actions can eventually carry considerable psychological weight. The action itself may be ordinary; the meaning repeatedly attached to it is not.

Ritual can also create structure. Instead of a dynamic existing as a vague idea, certain moments have recognisable beginnings, transitions and endings.

Importantly, ritual doesn’t make something consensual simply because it has been performed before. A ritual should exist within the agreements of the people involved, and those agreements can change.

Good ritual isn’t about copying what looks impressive in someone else’s relationship.

It is about deliberately creating repeated actions that mean something to yours.

I see your point but with my Sub the transition is automatic. She is my Queen outside the bedroom. She is the jewel in my crown. The person above all in my life. She loves the abrupt transition.
