ON HER KNEES

Some people pray. Others kneel for entirely different reasons.

The room smelled of red wine, cigarettes, and bad decisions.

She was kneeling in front of me, wearing that insolent little smile. The kind of smile that says go on, asshole, show me what you’ve got.

I hated that smile.

Naturally, I wanted to see it disappear.

I hooked a finger beneath her collar and lifted her chin.

“Look at you. All that mouth, all that attitude. And now you’re waiting for me to tell you what to do.”

“Maybe I’m just bored.”

I laughed. A dry, ugly sound.

“Sure, sweetheart. And I’m a fucking saint.”

Her smile widened.

That was when I slapped her cheek. Sharp enough to silence the smart mouth, gentle enough to stay within the limits we’d agreed on. She stared at me, breathing differently now, the little actress finally dropping her mask.

“Still having fun, brat?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“That’s better.”

I pulled her into a kiss that tasted of wine and trouble. She clutched my shirt as if she hated me for making her want this. I knew the feeling. Wanting somebody is a lousy business. It makes intelligent people do stupid things and fools of the rest of us.

I guided her back onto her knees.

“Eyes on me.”

She obeyed.

I told her what I wanted, and she answered without words, with a quiet willingness that made the room feel smaller. I watched her look up at me, the collar resting against her throat, her earlier arrogance melting into anticipation. The rest belonged to us, behind a closed door, beyond the reach of the world and its endless bullshit.

For once, neither of us had to pretend.

Later, she lay beside me beneath a twisted sheet. The collar sat on the nightstand beside an empty glass. Outside, some bastard was arguing with a taxi driver, and the city kept being the city.

She ran her fingers over my chest.

“You’re a real asshole, you know that?”

“Been told.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

She laughed, then went quiet.

“Why are you nice to me afterward?”

That question hit harder than anything else she’d done that night.

I looked at the ceiling. There were stains up there that looked like countries nobody wanted to live in.

“Because the world’s cruel enough without me adding to it.”

She turned toward me and rested her head against my shoulder.

I put an arm around her.

No promises. No forever. No bullshit about saving each other.

Just two imperfect people, a warm bed, and a little peace stolen from a world that never gave a damn.

Sometimes, that’s the closest thing to love a man gets.

And sometimes, it’s more than enough.

Damn. Well now I guess I gotta go to Switzerland 😅
