Breakbeat has a lot of origins in the late 80s / early 90s UK rave scene.
Predominantly music was centred around a House style 4/4 beat pattern. Musicians started to add more complex percussion elements to their recordings and often sampled a ‘break’ from old funk records.

As the 90s progressed, the breaks became more electronic sounding but still kept a similar off kilter kick drum style, also known as ‘on the one’ ( because the emphasis would be on the off beat )
Since the 90s breakbeat has spawned many subgenres and variations.
