AJMAYDAY Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 I have a device in mind that I want to make. I can picture the main piece in my mind, but can't figure what it's called to find as something relatively inexpensive. The device that I have in mind is an oscillating clamp puller, for lack of a better name. The idea is you attach the clamps, tie string to the clamps, tie that string to the device and place the device exactly far enough away to almost pull on the clamp. You then start the device and whatever the string is tied to on the device oscillates away from the clamp, pulling it taut, then oscillating back to the original position to give contrast. An oscillation every 1-3 seconds would be ideal. Does anybody have any ideas for the main body of this device, the oscillator itself? I want a link to a hundred dollar official bids machine that does this, I'm sure it can be done with something already commonly used for obviously different purposes. Thank you for any ideas!!!
cautiousswitch Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 A metronome generally has a period of less than s second. A quick internet search shows that they make mechanical ones, perhaps there is one that can be adjusted to a slower period. The pull strength may not be what you are looking for though. Look up a few and then check your local music store to see if you can't get a demonstration of one.
AJMAYDAY Posted May 30, 2020 Author Posted May 30, 2020 I didn't think of that, a metronome sounds like a good lead. The pull strength is definitely a concern though, I'd like something pretty strong.
cautiousswitch Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 A small chain would work as well as a string. A bigger concern may be how to mounting the metronome somehow so that the pull won't move it rather than pull on the clamps.
quesoteric Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 high s***d linear actuator attached to a metal bar?
AJMAYDAY Posted May 30, 2020 Author Posted May 30, 2020 I figured I'd tape the metronome or whatever device in place once I figured out the correct distance. Or maybe some parallel rope, idk. The actuator is towards what I'm looking for, but too jerky. I want the string to be pulled taut, not ripped off. Also looks pretty expensive. Thanks for the idea though!
quesoteric Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 (edited) Perhaps a microphone driven in reverse? Is the string in a perma-taut state throughout its oscillation? Edited May 30, 2020 by quesoteric -
