Building the "Lair": Seeking advice on functional vs. display-grade whips.

I’m currently building out a home studio—think a mix of gothic aesthetics and a high-end horror collection—and I’m looking to incorporate a whip into my "Gothic Gear Master" persona. I want something that looks the part on display, but I’m also eager to learn the actual craft of using it.
For those who collect or use them, I’d love your input:

consider that most whips are not beginners toys.   

And then I guess context here is on whether you would be using them on someone, or on objects (watch me whip this bottle off this fence - versus - I'm going to whip you) - in both cases, participating in community and meeting people can lead to opportunites to learn if you meet someone who is a bit more skilled with a whip.   Mind, I guess, practicing alone in a back garden can help also.

But if using on people then you need to work through the basics of impact play first

To echo - and in part, paraphrase eyemblacksheep, a whip is not a toy.
If you have ANY intentions of using your display piece on another human being, both it, and Yourself must be “fit for purpose”.

I’ve always believed that quality is more important than quantity throughout my life, so start by deciding what you actually intend to do with this piece.
Whips come in so many different styles, and materials.
A vintage bullwhip will potentially cost you thousands… a modern one of good quality hundreds of pounds.
Of course there are dropship sites which will sell you one that ‘looks’ good on display for 20 quid…
But - the second you pick it up, the weight and ‘feel’ will be wrong.
And when you try to use it on another human being, chances are it will disintegrate, -potentially causing harm as it does so.

A word on using whips.
Watching a few videos won’t make you safe - or an expert. Please, do your research. Consider taking physical training -from someone who knows what they are doing. Visit Clubs perhaps, and watch people using whips, and having them used on them… and talk to Doms, Dommes, Masters and Mistresses. Good ones will be happy to guide you.
As a hobby, I build vintage schoolrooms for people, often in private houses, using age appropriate equipment and furniture from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s etc. - and I can assure you of this:
Genuine quality materials cost, but are authentic, and look feel -even smell the part !

From a bottoms perspective, before you use something on someone else, have it used on you. You will understand much better from personal experience of how something will feel for your partner if you have personal knowledge of that feeling yourself. It will make you a better top.
