I Left the Window Open

Recommended Posts

When I was younger, I had this reoccurring thought, fantasy, daydream… whatever you wanna call it.

I was always a fan of horror. I loved all sorts of gruesome media I probably shouldn’t have been interacting with at that time. Anyways, I would often muse about being swept off my feet by some “bad guy” and taken away in the middle of the night. They would whisk me away to a place where when I spoke, people understood me. Where I would be seen and held for the way I was. Oddities and all. I wouldn’t be “the weird one” anymore, I would just be me.

It's funny because I was so attached to that idea that I’d start leaving my bedroom windows open, even in the middle of a Midwest winter. And every time I woke up to the sun on my face and not the arms of some villain scooping me up, my heart would sink.

Most people at that age would have had fairytale dreams. They’re the princess, or the knight, maybe even some sort of wizard. I don’t know, kids have strange dreams. Anyways, my point is I dreamt of being a victim. But not really. Because I always wanted it didn’t I? And in the end, I’d wind up somewhere better than where I was, so it was a win for me anyway!

But that daydream faded away after a while. Life happened. I grew up, you know? No more silly little dreams to hold onto, I was an adult now. I was above indulging that part of my childhood.

At least that's what I thought.

My bedroom in my tiny apartment was always a bit stuffy. So I didn’t really think about it when I left my window open that night. I just wanted to hear the crickets, maybe let in the soft summer breeze. At least I was smart enough to wear some sport shorts and a t-shirt…

A gentle thump woke me up. A glance to my alarm clock would tell me it was roughly 3:00 AM. I rubbed my eyes groggily and shifted over in bed, chalking the noise up to my cat getting the zoomies again.

I huffed softly and my eyes drifted shut, the lull of sleep pulling me in. Something brushed my hair.

‘This fuckin’ cat,’ I thought.

And then fingers carded through the strands and gently tugged my head back.

My eyes snapped open as I tried to scream, but I was quickly cut off by a rag stuffed into my mouth.

The face I stared up at, wide-eyed and trembling was a face I saw only in my dreams. What I once thought was my guardian angel.

“You left your window open for me again. I couldn’t resist stopping by for a quick hello,” it rumbled.

That voice was something I could not place. Soft and sweet, laced with an edge to it that made my *** turn cold. Like the screech of metal on metal overlaid with bass tones not too different from that of thunder. Something wholly unnatural, it hurt my ears to make sense of it.

Reality kicked back in as I tried to thrash and scream.

“Aht-aht!” It chided. “Get some rest, I’ll see you in the morning,” the voice from everywhere said. Like it was a fact, like I had no choice in the matter. It was right.

Dreams were coming true…
