Before the first touch

The door clicked shut. Neither moved.

He stood by the edge of the room, watching her take off her coat, slow and deliberate. She didn’t hurry. She knew he was watching. She wanted him to.

“You’re very quiet,” she said, hanging it over the chair, turning to face him, hands resting lightly on her hips. “Second thoughts?”

“Not at all,” he said, his voice steady, low. “Just studying you. Wondering how much of this is for me, and how much is you teasing yourself by knowing I’m watching.”

A flicker of a smile. “And if I said both?”

“Then I’d say we’re perfectly matched.” He took one slow step closer — not close enough to touch, just close enough that the air felt different. “Tell me what you’re thinking right now. Don’t edit it.”

She tilted her head. “I’m thinking you’re standing very far away for someone who says they want to know every part of me.”

“I’m exactly where I choose to be,” he said. “Closer would be easy. Closer would be rushing. I’d rather see you lean in than have me pull you near. I want to know you’re coming to me because you need to, not because I’m there.”

Her breathing shifted — almost imperceptible, but he caught it. “And what if I like being pulled?”

“Then you’ll tell me,” he said. “And I’ll listen. But not before you tell me. Not before I know it’s what you want, not just what you think I expect.”

She took a step forward, closing half the space between them. “You make it sound like a negotiation.”

“Everything is,” he said. “What you want, what I want, where the edges meet. What feels like pleasure and what feels like pressure. I don’t want you to give me anything you aren’t burning to give.”

“Who said anything about giving?” she said softly, eyes dark. “I was thinking about taking.”

He paused. “Then take. But take with me, not from me. Tell me what you’re imagining. The exact moment you’re wishing would happen next.”

She hesitated, then let her gaze drop, slow, before meeting his eyes again. “I’m imagining you still standing there, watching me, and not touching me until I beg you to. And I’m wondering which one of us will break first.”

He smiled, slow and sure. “Then we’re playing the same game. And just so you know — I’m very patient.”

“Are you?” She took another step; now only inches separated them. He could feel the warmth of her, but his hands stayed at his sides. “You won’t touch me even if I ask you to?”

“I’ll touch you exactly how you ask, and exactly when you ask,” he said. “But until you say the words — clear, plain, no guessing — I’m right here. Watching. Waiting. Making sure you’re as sure as you are eager.”

She let out a breath she’d been holding, and for a second the playful mask slipped — something raw and hungry underneath. “You’re impossible.”

“I’m careful,” he said gently. “And I’m yours. But only when you say so.”

She lifted her chin. “Then I say so. Not because I’m breaking — but because I’m ready. And because I want you to know I mean it.”

He lifted one hand, stopped just before it brushed her arm. “Say it again. Clearer.”

She leaned in, her voice barely a breath against his ear. “Touch me. Now. Please.”

And even then — he waited one heartbeat longer, just to be certain.
