Virtual fantasies, my thoughts on VR

As someone who is about to start a career in designing virtual spaces and experiences to help people understand mental health, I have been really fascinated by the applications VR can bring to our community.

People who have spent years in VR are at this point discovering some really interesting side effects.

We all understand the concept of phantom limb syndrome and people feeling limbs they once had, I have worked with people who have lost limbs and VR has helped them not only get rid of the physical ***, but also deal with PTSD in a safe way.

But what about the flip side of this? Would you be shocked if i told you people who socialise in VR are choosing their avatars, designing them and slowly identifying as these characters they created, but what if i told you that just like phantom limb syndrome where people learn to no longer feel a limb, they are also unwittingly rewiring their brains to feel body parts they never had!!

That is right, people with cat ears and tails are now able to feel when someone touches them... mind blown!

And what if you are born into the wrong gender? Why not just change it in VR? People will always treat you by your exterior. This has lead to gender euphoria in many people struggling with gender dysphoria.

Imagine a world where you can interact with people all over the world, feel human touch and be part of a larger community and all from the comfort and safety of your home.

So obviously when we are comfortable, surrounded by people we like and they like us, you will eventually meet someone you like that little bit more, erotic roleplay or ERP is becoming a big thing, maybe because its new, or maybe because it is so safe.

It may sound crazy at first but picture a VR kink club; staff, demos, classes, play. I think this would be an amazing place to build confidence and not risk too much, i think this would lead to more people going to actual kink events. There is all sorts of remote tech out there to share pleasure, we dont need to rely on our imagination, just imagine the visuals, the atmosphere and moderation would be so easy.

You see a cute person across the room, you click on them and see a bio, some talking points and maybe their kink results, maybe even a rating. You walk up to them, and ask them if they would like to talk... you know, how it use to be, except when you block them they literally disappear 😅 they are still there but you cant see them, they cant see you.

This is all very hard to explain, i know just enough to see how exciting this is and enough to know that with the metaverse coming, it is inevitable that VR will be a large part of our work lives as well as our social lives.

So i put it to you, what are your feelings?

I'm more than happy to give more detail if anyone is interested in this thread.

This is so deep, John Holmes would be jealous. But very intriguing. Hope this thread continues.

Yes the imagination is powerful, but our bodies still know the difference between a human touch and a virtual one. And we mustn’t be too excited to create further distance between ourselves and the real thing, or actual human connection will soon be owned and monitored by big business alone.

It is interesting that you feel like it would create distance, and yet many would say it brings us closer.

There are so many interactions that may never have happened without an online presence.

We need to also remember that you are not being ***d to do this, those who enjoy it will do it, those who don't will not. What is important is it will bring people that little bit closer in a way that never would have happened.

VR may never replace physical contact, but if your aim of going to a kink club is to touch people....

I just think as a learning tool, as a toe in the door or a safe way to interact that isnt text based, VR is a major leap forward and could be yet another way to experience the community for those who may never have otherwise braved the plunge.

And maybe if we took the sex out of it people may learn how to act 😅

It’s a nice sentiment and lots of truth in it, BUT big business runs the world and they always will find ways to monetise basic human needs. New tech only comes about if it’s profitable, and while it may provide connection to more people, it doesn’t bring people CLOSER together, especially when *** is involved.
The internet is currently skewing people’s ideas in a massively polarised way- based on search histories and interests and how pliable they are. VR could be great-but it will mostly be used as another form of control- and it’s much easier to keep the power structure strong when people are divided (divide and conquer) than when they come together.

Look up VRchat, its community created and run, its free and is the most popular social app in VR.

It has nightclubs, art installations, members clubs and so so much more.

Diplo did a live concert and streamed it in VR not so long ago and still for free.

Realistically i dont think the spaces will ever cost *** as someone will just copy it for free but Avatars, clothes, props and other things will cost.

Once again its the service user's choice if they want to join, it will only be big company controlled  if you pick a company controlled application.

It is so easy to create a space in VR that you can choose your own space and if you cant find one you can just make one.

Just like the web used to be. But now everyone uses google, everyone uses a social media app (and those aren’t the things that cost ***) but what a wonderful way it’s become to control peoples wants and needs!

I totally agree that these things exist and people use them religiously.. but you dont have to use them, if you use social media its because you want to but with incognito, ip hiders, VPNs or open source programs we have 100s of ways to use the best programs without buying into all the schemes.

Plus, by design we are all going to lean towards anonymity in these areas, so big companies wont want to get involved because we the consumers wont get involved if it isn't anonymous.

This healthy *** you have is the reason i have faith that it will be that way

It’s nice to live in your head, but it’s full of fantasy.
