When you gift away your icons, the points are gifted away also.  However you can get your points back by going back and recollecting the icons that the system gifted away.  Work out which ones have been gifted and return to their original hiding place and they will be there waiting for you to recollect. Once you recollect you will also get the points back.

As you already have icons collected, the system will not allow anyone to gift you any. You can only be gifted icons if you have none collected.
