The quiet on the third floor felt absolute, tucked away at the top of the boutique hotel's narrow, carpeted staircase. Outside, the night air was still, and the distant streetlights filtered through the sheer curtains, ***ting soft geometric patterns across the wooden floorboards.
She leaned back against the plush headboard, sinking into the silence of the top floor. Downstairs, the lobby was empty, the front desk lights dimmed for the night. She was the only guest up here a private retreat three stories above the world. The room felt entirely secure, sealed off behind the heavy oak door. She let her breathing slow, allowing the stillness to settle over her.
Then, a faint creak echoed from the hallway.
It was the distinct sound of a floorboard shifting right outside her room, followed by the soft sound of a keycard reader chiming once.
Her eyes snapped toward the door. She had turned the deadbolt herself she was sure of it.
Before she could move, the heavy oak handle moved smoothly downward. The lock disengaged with a solid, quiet thud. Slowly, the door swung inward, breaking the dark room with a widening stripe of warm light from the third-floor corridor.
Standing in the entryway was a silent silhouette, framed against the amber hallway. They stepped inside, and with a soft click, the door swung closed again, plunging the room back into shadow....
