Icons are hidden all over the FET Universe, you can hunt for them on your own, or you can use the clues in this treasure hunt thread which will hint you where to look, decipher the clues and then go hunting and if you are in the right place you will find an icon overlapped on the screen that you can tap on and it will collect in your treasure chest. On the app the icons are circles in shape and on the website they are square and both have a small picture within.

You find someone with zero icons and hit the gift option. One of yours will  be chosen at random. Once you have worked out which it was you can recollect it for yourself. It's how Andy just below your grid map gets to 5k+ donations. You need to be a little OCD to do it as it's exceptionally tedious on an industrial scale but can be another way to break the ice. Long shot though.
