You could be gifting away without realising when you are swiping through profiles you are looking at.  I've done it myself by swiping over the area where you can gift an icon as you are scrolling down the profile and if you happen to tap that area by mistake and they have no icons collected, one of yours may have been inadvertently gifted.  You just need to work out which one that has been gifted and return to its original hiding place and it will be there waiting for you to recollect.  It should also say in your treasure chest if you have gifted icons away at the top of the page.
