Does kink reveal who we are, or who we allow ourselves to become?

THE SHADOW SELF

There is the person the world knows, the person one believes oneself to be, and perhaps the person who appears when nobody is watching.

Are they all the same person?

Consider someone who spends their days making decisions, carrying responsibility and maintaining control. Yet, in a private dynamic, they find pleasure in surrendering it.

Or someone who is usually quiet and accommodating, but discovers a commanding, assertive side through a Dominant role.

Is kink revealing something that was always there? Is it creating room for something that ordinary life rarely permits?

The shadow we keep

Carl Jung used the term shadow to describe aspects of the self that remain unacknowledged, disowned or outside one's preferred self-image.

It is an interesting lens through which to consider kink, provided one does not mistake it for a diagnosis.

A fantasy about surrender does not necessarily mean someone secretly wants to be powerless. A fascination with dominance does not automatically mean someone is controlling. And enjoying a particular role does not mean that role defines the entirety of one's personality.

Sometimes fantasy is simply a place where the mind can explore possibilities without having to turn them into reality.

Permission to become something else

Perhaps this is where the psychology becomes interesting.

A person who carries responsibility all day may find relief in consensual surrender. Someone who rarely feels heard may enjoy discovering their authority. A Caregiver dynamic may offer room for nurturing, structure and reassurance, while a Little may find comfort in playfulness, vulnerability and being cared for.

None of these experiences necessarily contradict the person's everyday identity.

The submissive is not incapable of making decisions. The Dominant is not required to command every room. The Caregiver does not have to nurture everyone, and the little does not stop being an adult.

The dynamic creates a context. The people within it give that context meaning.

The question of authenticity

There is a temptation to assume that the private self is the more authentic one, as though the public self were merely a mask.

Glitch is not entirely convinced.

Perhaps both are authentic. Different environments invite different parts of a person to come forward. A role can reveal an overlooked quality, offer an unfamiliar experience, or simply provide an enjoyable form of expression.

And perhaps the more important distinction is not between the real self and the hidden self, but between what one genuinely desires and what one feels expected to desire.

A fantasy does not have to become an identity. An identity does not have to become a performance. And curiosity does not create an obligation to act.

A few questions for the curious

1. Does kink reveal a side of oneself that already exists, or does it help develop a side that might otherwise remain unexplored?
2. Can someone be fundamentally different inside a dynamic without being any less authentic outside it?
3. Do Dominants and submissives gravitate towards their roles because of their everyday personalities, or sometimes because those roles offer a contrast?
4. Is there a difference between discovering a hidden desire and simply enjoying the freedom to imagine it?
5. Should every fantasy be understood, or are some better left as fantasies?

Perhaps the shadow is not always something dark, dangerous or forbidden.

Sometimes it is simply a part of oneself that has not yet been given a language, a context or permission to exist.

And perhaps understanding oneself does not mean acting upon every desire. It means being able to look at one honestly, without shame, assumption or the need to become it.

Glitch suspects the shadow has rather more nuance than its reputation suggests.

My kinks make me wonder im dominant but I love to give and I love to be touched ...
Ive got alot to learn i welcome advice

1, both. Kink can be a way to express your shadow and incorporate it into the Self. That includes spaces of the Anima/Animas as well.

2, yes. I'm a caregiver, I literally spend 40 hours a week caring for others. It's nothing like anything else in my personal life and kink is also is own seperate category of expression. Again, the shadow can be expressed in the space of kink.

3, also both, switches exist. I switch to sub when I don't want responsibility. In my work, personal life and typically kink I am the person in charge. I am good at it and it comes naturally to lead to a certain extent. When I want to be cared for the way I do others I switch.

4, I guess? People enjoy movies without wanting to enact it. Imagination is a must human nature.

5, I think shadow work is important as to why. There's a lot of psychology in sex and kink and things like CNC is often for a victim to relive parts of that experience in a way that is controlled by them. It helps to replace the memories of the act with positive memories of the cnc scene instead.

Shadow just means light isn't directly cast into it. It doesn't mean it's some dark or nefarious thing, that's a social media thingy for engagement. The best places to read are in the shadow of a tree.

Kink is whatever gets you going, sexually and that's it, basically.
I think people are trying to over-intellectualize it way too much.
And I think this urgent need to mirror public life and what one does in the bedroom is a desperate attempt to justify kink - particularly being submissive: people need to explain their turn-ons to themselves, because saying "idk, I just like *** and getting dominated" isn't enough.

There are people who are dominant in their vanilla life and dominant in the bedroom. People who are submissive people pleasers and wanna get dominated in their sexual life.

There is no "if one is dominant and carries a lot of responsibility he/she just wants to give up control for once and get slapped in the face". It's arbitrary. There is no rule, no strict pattern. People are individuals and every combination is possible.

I remember long before I even knew I was kinky when a friend of mine, who is a cop, told me he went to a dominatrix.
And after he passionately told me how hot it was for him, he instantly switched and told me something about his job and how dominant he has to be in his day to day life. It felt more like an excuse. Like "I need to get degraded and punished and get *** inflicted upon, BECAUSE my job requires me to do what a cop has to do".

Ok, you got responsibility. Alright, fine. But why then do you necessarily need to get sexually dominated, slapped around, degraded, whipped and spat on? Put in a dress and lick off boots?
Why are vanilla people who carry a lot of responsibility not feeling the urge to get consensually violated during a CNC session? Where is the "mirror rule" here?
It just doesn't apply. It's arbitrary. And that's totally fine.
Actually I think the arbitrariness makes all of this way more beautiful and makes us way more individual than all those patterns that people try to communicate as being facts.
When someone is dominant in his/her private life and this automatically means that he/she is submissive in his/her sexual (kinky) life, wouldn't that make a person see-through, boring and robbed of their individuality and of the magic of discovering someone's deeper and yet to be discovered self?

I like not knowing what a person is, likes and hides. If I got to know someone who is a cop and I'd automatically knew "ah, so you like to get dominated in the bedroom, I see", wouldn't this be boring af?
I'm as feminist as I can be, yet as a dom I like what I like. "Mirror-rule?" Maybe. But a friend of mine is pretty feminist herself and yet she likes to dominate men. No "mirror-rule". Hm. Doesn't seem to me that any "true selves" are getting revealed via kink here. No guiding thread.

Ok, I'm getting lost. What I'm trying to say is: people get off to whatever stuff. Arbitrarily. And sometimes there is no explanation other than "idk, i just like it". And that's totally fine.
