To start with, when people ask about ideas to punishments, often they mean funishments. 
I personally don't believe in giving too often punishments as a method of education. if you are clear enough and you both agree, you don't need punishments. arriving to the point of true punishment is something that need self reflection. for the Dom and the sub. funishments on the other hand, are something that is FUN to both.

if a sub behaving bad in order to be punished, because it is exciting  or something he/she enjoyed, then giving that punishment is missing it target. because it will cause the sub to keep behaving bad. so other punishment need to be chosen.. yet it needs to be one of the things that are spoken in advance. to my opinion the sub need to know what will be the punishment and give consent to that in advance.

beside that.. funishments don't really need a reason. and in general people that enjoy different kind of kinky activities, all time its with consent, they can do it any time. you don't need to punish in order to spank for example.. if you enjoy.. do that.
