Trial and error is worth it's weight in gold. Almost 20 years worth of evolution. Hands on has always been how I've pushed the curve.
For me every girl is differnt and how I need to be a different Dom so both are happy and enjoy that time. so lots of questions are asked
all my best kink ideas come to me in my dreams

For anything play based

I watch others play for inspiration. I attend demos and workshops

I remember the golden rule, that every play partner is different, and try to open good communication over what they like or don't

If something is experimental, then the play will be different - i.e. we will both know it's practice, experimenting and discussing around this accordingly.  While there are lessons in getting things wrong or messing up, the aim is never to hurt (beyond what is acceptable) physically or mentally

Attend classes. Get out of the house and attend a class and learn a new skill.
Workshops / classes, watching people at events, ***r learning, meeting friends in the scene and sharing tips, listening to people more experienced in the scene. Practice is really important, but I do worry with the suggestion of “trial and error” that the error is a sub getting hurt. You can only figure out so much of the safety side on your own.

yep, seconded.

there may well be some working out - but - ugh, over the past I've seen relationships fall apart because in trial and error, there is sometimes a consequence to the error and sometimes the consequence is "No, I won't play with you any more"

Probably classes help, but even as Dom I don't think you are supposed to know everything. Being open and honest with your experience level is good. And having a partner or 2 that is down to learn with you will help.
I've learned in almost the same ways. Except I have had woman back in my younger years teach me what they need.
