You've seen a Hitachi wand massager before. Chances are you might own one. If not, you've seen it in porn, an adult store, or browsing sex toys online. Either you've heard of the Hitachi Magic Wand, now the Magic Wand Original, or seen the cadre of knockoffs available on the market, but there’s a lot you might not know about these ubiquitous products.

The history of the Hitachi Wand massager:

  • The Hitachi Magic Wand was originally patented in 1968, with the genuine intention of making a really strong back massager. Who would have thought, right? Betty Dodson iconized it as a clitoral vibrator through her book and classes on female masturbation, leading to its status as a household name for less innocent activities.

  • Hitachi has had a difficult relationship with their product as a sex toy. Although they briefly accepted it and even made chocolate likenesses of the product for Good Vibrations and their own executive meetings in the 90s, in the early 2000s they became more concerned with it being related to sexuality. That led to them deciding to stop production in 2013, and were only swayed by their US distributor suggesting they rebrand without the name; thus, the Magic Wand Original was born.

  • all about wand massagers why i love my hitachiThe popularity of wand massagers like the Hitachi is due to their intense, rumble vibrations. Earlier vibrators were unable to replicate the intensity, and many people find it to be a reliable way to stimulate the entirety of the internal clitoris.

  • Many alternate versions of the Hitachi wand massager have appeared on the market. Some are legitimate products with better materials, more settings (the Magic Wand Original only has two settings, and neither are subtle), smaller sizes, and vibration patterns. Examples of this are the Maxi Wand, Doxy Wand, Lelo’s Smart Wand, the Shibari Wand, and many others. There have been even more illegitimate knockoffs made of poor materials and apparently also regularly touting fake electronics certifications. Buying sex toys from Amazon is not the best idea, and be careful to not buy from untrusted sources: body safe and real electronics certifications are important. Learn how to spot real products and fake products, there are a ton of resources online.

  • Hitachi’s and other wand massagers have been popular for use in kink scenes as well, especially in scenes with forced orgasm, orgasm denial, and various bondage scenarios. The strong vibrations make it difficult to hold off orgasm, and therefore it is easy to use these kinds of products for various forms of pleasurable torture.

It is important to note that these kinds of vibrations are not for everyone—some people just don’t find broad, strong vibrations to be pleasurable. And that’s absolutely ok! Everyone is different and likes different things. The good news is that unlike most other sex toys, you can opt to just use your Hitachi wand massager for back massages instead if you don’t like it on your bits.

The Thunderstick is a good alternative. It is variable speed vice two speed on the Magic Wand. My submissive loves it. http://www.amazon.com/Great-Valentines-Day-Supercharged-Thunderstick/dp/B01B0TTERO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455315897&sr=8-1&keywords=thunder+stick+massager
