Tired of pornography that ignored women’s pleasure, she broke into the adult industry in 2004 with indie adult cinema that goes beyond traditional gender roles and tired stereotypes. She is a proponent of the female gaze in pornography and employs women behind the camera in all key positions. By refusing to typecast performers based on their age, race, sexuality or gender and allowing them to have sex that feels organic and natural to them, she confronts pornography that focuses on male pleasure and sexual athletics and instead focuses on the potential and eroticism of human sexuality and relationships. Lust uses her work to promote the cinematic possibilities of adult film and high-quality storytelling. In an industry that often fails to show a true representation of sex, her focus on female pleasure, cinematic values, diversity, and an ethical production process, has helped to change how pornography is consumed. She is now the owner and founder of four adult sites. Her XConfessionsaudio-visual project turns the public’s anonymous fantasies into explicit and artistic short indie films. Meanwhile, Lust Cinema offers cinematic, plot-driven original series and feature films with relatable storylines and realistic situations of sex that are part of a wider narrative. Else Cinema, also known as the Erika Lust Soft Edition, is the first video on demand platform offering more sensual movies for those looking for a softer experience. Finally, The Store by Erika Lust is an extensive online collection of adult erotic movies, screened and selected according to Lust’s ethical standards. In 2015, Lust gave her TEDx talk It’s Time for Porn to Change. In 2017 her story was featured in the Netflix documentary series Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On and in 2019 Erika was named as one of the BBC’s 100 most influential women of the year.
