European ‘art house ‘ films in the late 90’s started to explore kink in more graphic detail. The Story of O was a fabulous book but the film, whilst visually exciting, does not really convey the struggles of a power exchange. A lot of the ‘sex’ films from the 70’s and 80’s were spoilt by soft focus camera work, cringe worthy soundtracks and an abundance of pubic hair! There is a sequel to the story of O called ‘Fruits of Passion’ . Personally , I thought this was a more compelling watch having seen the original Story of O

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant is another book turned film and more focused on the relationship and evolving consent .

The Duke of Burgundy is more recent but , as with most art house films the title is a little misleading

Eyes Wide Shut has a good storyline and highlights the nature and consequences of concealing kinks from a partner
