Shibari rope prep and storage

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in purchasing some jute rope to prepare for the new year and learn how to prepare it in house, cleaning technics and storage. Does anyone have suggestions on these processes? Especially getting the diesel smell out of the rope and cleaning technics after a shibari session.

I recommend buying from the people in the community that make rope specifically for bondage. Like moco jute or my nawashi.

If you're buying rough Just singe all the extra fibers off by quickly passing in front of a propane torch, rub after with a damp cloth then rub a final time with jojoba oil

I roll my working sets up in pillowcases for storage.

I have nothing helpful to say but jute IMHO is terrible. At least get hemp. BUT I am sensitive and allergic, and also dislike the feel of the jute (as well as the low strength of it.)
Good info!

You can wash that diesel smell out in a dishwasher or a pressure cooker. Jute is a vegetable and running it in a pressure cooker with some water and Vaseline does exactly what you’d expect: softens the rope and pulls the preservative out into the water. You then want to dry it under tension, and singe it with a plumbing torch to burn off the frizzies. Then if you want to you can treat it with beeswax, mineral oil, camelia oil, or whatever lubricates your fantasies. You can find timing for the pressure cooker technique online.

On the matter of jute vs other natural rope: a house of straw and a house of brick are both houses, and a straw house will stand where a brick house sinks into the swamp. Know your materials, know your technique, and know your bottom’s preferences and allergies. There’s nothing wrong with tying with Jute. Enjoy!

Thank you All for your helpful comments. I've been out of touch for many years, but as the new year approaches, I feel the need to make some lifestyle changes and get back into my love for bonage and art of shabari.
