Notification problem

I am receiving repeated notifications this morning saying I have a message from someone (last person to have sent me one) but no messages are there. I Have been chatting with this person a while now and having a constant stream of message notifications for none existent messages is going to make it hard to know when a real message comes in. What is going on here ? Thanks
