Communication is definitely required. My last girlfriend and I both have sub tendencies, which made things very interesting. It was fun to get to play around with the Dom/sub dynamic, but I know it would have ended up even better if we spoke to each other more. We both liked things rough, but were afraid to hurt each other as we'd never been on the giving side before, so talking and encouragement are key. Now only if she hadn't had to move away...
