It can be a control thing, where the single person has literally all of the power simply by threatening to expose the married party.
They're safe in the knowledge they have nothing to loose, and the married person dotes on them or agrees to anything, gifts, trips, etc.

Sometimes it is hard for the married person to leave when they are unhappy. That all depends on the situation. There’s men.. like mine that insist on me having another man or woman so he can watch and join if there’s consent by the other party (No male on male contact).
