It has been a "thing" for pretty much as long as I've been using the Internet - some of the chat rooms I used to use back in the days of mIRC and the like were literally littered with collars that had been given one minute and discarded the next.

Was usually signified by a Doms name with the subs name in brackets after it and then there was a difference between which bracket was used and what it meant.

On-line D/s is still very much a "thing" for some too - particularly where distance plays a part, or other factors prevent actual meeting - and if people find ways to make it work, and are happy with the arrangement can be very "real", so all power to them.

It's no more or less real than anything else.
