What is meant by handcuffs?

I've seen buckling wrist straps referred to as handcuffs, even if they aren't connected to each other. 

Rope is much more versatile.  Buckling cuffs as described above can be easier and faster to change positions.  Standard, police issue cuffs have their appeal but are more limited in their usage.

Given a choice, I would probably go with the buckling cuffs.

Rope a million times over, it's a very personal and intimate thing to tie someone, but putting handcuffs on someone is very detached and impersonal.
