Body Fetishes: Why are some "Mainstream" and others "Hidden"?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been spending some time thinking about how the world of body fetishes is evolving. It’s fascinating to see how certain interests have practically become "mainstream" or at least very socially visible.

We see so much content dedicated to feet, legs, and hands, or materials like leather. Even things like hair fetish or armpits seem to have a huge, established following now. They are celebrated, discussed, and have massive communities.

But it makes me wonder about the rest of the spectrum. Why do you think other aspects of the body or bodily functions, like spitting, snot, sweat or even more specific physical details—remain so far in the shadows?

Is it just a matter of "aesthetic standards," or is there a psychological barrier that makes some body parts more "acceptable" to obsess over than others?

Personally, I think it's because society has a specific idea of 'cleanliness,' which makes things like spitting and similar things feel more transgressive. What do you guys think?

I had this thought the other day! I think you're right about the sociatal norm of cleanliness. I have a **** kink and I don't tell most people because they might think it's gross. I do think things like that are on their way to becoming a little more normalized, squirt is a good example. I think it could develop into accepting bodily kinks more in general if it continues to become more known. I wish people knew how *** it actually is, to just let go and surrender. that's what I love about it!

I think what makes some body parts more acceptable is bcs how they heavily linked to sexual activity in the mainstream society. Kink in general is to describe attraction to things that are considered taboo (something gross, forbidden, v!0lent etc) and against what’s accepted in general functioning society. What makes it exciting is bcs ppl can experience the taboo in ‘secret’. It’s the thrill that triggers. But in many cases, ppl just like what they like. They just.. attracted to it not bcs its taboo but bcs they find it pretty.
For example, Im so attracted to waist.
Idk why its not more common. But Im so heavily loving it. The curve, the arch.
I find it so sexy.. I just love arch in general. Just by touching and caressing it gets me high.

I'm also not sure where these "massive communities" are - and how you'd define them as community - but hey ho

So, I think for example one of the main drivers is that there's a lot of people who make/sell content who need spaces to promote it and a lot of those have to stick to platform rules, and some also want to spread a net as wide as possible.  Stuff like feet, legs, armpits is kinda easy within the rules and without attracting too much negative comments -- they can also be passed off a little as "nooo.... this isn't fetish/sexual content - it's just a lady in a bikini" so on

Whereas a lot of the others kinda clearly are fetish content and there's no real plausible deniability

That said, I've been getting a lot recommended on instagram which has been things like baristas's spitting into coffee at customers request (all a stage, no actual barristers were acosted) or one involving goth girls spitting chocolate sauce onto desserts.  So yeah, the contest is out there.  But they have to make it look more like a skit, than a fetish

One way to understand this is to look to evolution and adaptive traits. I think we can learn a lot about why we (humans generally on average) do what we do from evolutionary psychology. There is a concept of “disgust” that provides insight into understanding the question you raised.
From that perspective it’s described as an adaptive trait acting as a behavioral immune system connected to human survival. Being triggered by things that expose us to disease pathogens like feces and vomit with disgust protected our ancestors from exposure to infection. It’s described as a survival trait evolved from our early ancestors.
Those that were disgusted by things that could transmit infection avoided it being transmitted to them more often than those that didn’t. Over millennia they had a greater survival rate and therefore had more kids on average than those who didn’t. An adaptive survival trait.
Similar to our fight or flight reaction to potential environmental threat, the disgust reaction kept us from the threat communicable disease. No thought process or conscious decision making in either of those instantaneous reactions, but having that reaction kept us from danger more often than not having it. It increased survival rates. Over millions of years that makes a difference at a population level. Feet, armpits, etc don’t spread infection. I think it’s interesting to understand things about us by considering traits as evolutionary adaptations that benefited us as a species, increasing our ancestors survival on average in comparison to those who didn’t have that trait.

A bit of further clarification is that traits that increased chances of survival didn’t just benefit the individuals having the trait, it benefited the entire clan or tribe, increasing survival rates of everyone in that tribe. Various members having a variety of different traits that increased chances of survival that much more.

Coming from the lens of a 62yo my approach has drifted from selfish responses to others’ kinks and toward placing everyone’s cravings pervs and taboos to the front row.
Below I’ll share context of what I’m personally open to, but many will reject outright.
I think underarms, scars, stretch marks & any perceived imperfections are underrated. Physical ailments and disabilities are also welcome to me. Prioritizing one’s personality makes it easy to embrace hidden adorations.
My lens has gained clarity because if finding a life partner one of us might have motor functions become compromised. Out of love I’d be eager to engage in cleaning every body fluid that she’d excrete, with zero hesitation. So I’m also willing to include play partners who want to experiment with me.

To be attracted to wide hips is pretty common but for drool or spit, I think it’s more psychological. The sight of drool gives me a sensation that makes me think “she must really be enjoying herself” which is reassuring. I dont normally get a wet kiss but I love the taste of a woman’s mouth, and I don’t mind the feeling of spit on my flesh. I don’t often find partners that can even really handle the feeling of drooling, or in alot of cases even French kissing.

A big part i believe is health and safety. Promoting certain things like delish spit in ones mouth can be hazardous. Another thing is respect. Not a lot of people understand that word anymore. When you can obsess alone you can manage to stay inside the lines. When someone else is involved a level of respect is needed. Respect for them yourself and society

At least in the chat areas. Maybe that creates some of the perception on here that some fetishes are hidden or absent..m because they are quite literally against the TOS of this chat site?

Tbh it's pretty easy. 50 shades of grey (pure ****) made fetishes a mainstream thing and people always pick the most boring stuff from that i.e. feet, hands and so on. The others, I would call it something like practical fetishes (bondage, Pegging, tease and denial) will be neglected in comparison as they *** you to do something and not just talk about your hands. Getting pegged is a way bigger step out of your comfort zone.
