I've had the same issue and it was the same thing with the last treasure hunt.  I got stuck with one clue and had to ask for help - turned out it should have been in the place that I had kept looking but it was never there for me.  The exact same thing has happened but this time I downloaded the app to check and found it straight away, checked back on my android browser and the icon isn't there.  Also with the last treasure hunt I went back to places where I knew I had found an icon but there were no longer there, checked back later and they had returned.

Is this just a way to get everyone to download the app?  Much though I like the site it's not an app I want to have on my phone for my kids to see!
