1. What does it mean to be transgender?

•Transgender people are people whose gender identifies different from the gender they were born with at birth.Transgender often shortened to Trans is also an umbrella term which includes peoples whose gender identity is the opposite of their assigned sex at birth. This may include Trans Men, Trans Women, Non-binary and or genderqueer. Transgender in its broader term can also include Cross-dressers.

2. Does anyone know how the term Transgender first came about?

•We first started with the word “Transvestite” which originated in 1910 and was used by the German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, who would later develop the Berlin Institute where the very first sex change operations were undertaken. It was not until approximately 1949 the word “Transexual’ was used in conversation which then followed on with Psychiatrist John F. Oliven from Columbia University coining the term “Transgender” in his 1965 reference work  Sexual Hygiene and Pathology.

3 Is there a difference between transgender and transexual?

•In general terms, the word transgender refers to people who identify differently from their biological sex. For example, a transgender person who is biologically female may feel that a male identity is a better fit and take the following steps:

• Use a male name instead of a female name.
• Use male pronouns instead of female pronouns.
• Dress as a man.
• Engage in activities that are typically associated with men in that culture, and vice versa for a Male.

•A transsexual is a person who physically transitions from male to female or vice versa. Some feel that the word transsexual should not always refer to physical changes. And some transsexuals no longer refer to themselves as such after they have finished their transition. They call themselves either men or women.

4. Does anyone know what Non-Binary means?

•Non-Binary Is a umbrella term for gender identities that are neither male or female. Non-Binary can also depend on the person and what gender and term they choose to use on the day.
