A/S/L was a very brief chapter in the evolution of how we use the internet

also less talked about was how if someone blocked you on a lot of the chat apps you never knew about it - people would literally disappear for hours and then come back with "Sorry D/C" (Disconnected, usually because the internet had cut out, or someone had had to use the phone, or credit had expired or whatever - you just didn't quiz it) and so if someone had actually blocked you they'd just appear as being offline and you'd never know they'd blocked you or not - they could also basically "appear offline" to specific people also.

good times in ways

But a lot was kinda in the time when there wasn't so much to the internet so almost one of the best things to do was chat with strangers who there was maybe a like for a band in common or whatever other interest - but it was definitely also a generational thing as further generations used the internet in different ways especially with the change to web 2.0 : it almost became less about talking to strangers but an extension on talking to friends and growing community

mind

there are still chat rooms which hark back to those days - though they're mostly full of people pretending to be underage in order to try to catch paedophiles
